FLC Police Department arrests suspect on weekend arson incidents

A suspect in the arson cases at Fort Lewis College last Sunday was taken into custody Thursday evening, March 14, 2024, by the Fort Lewis College Police Department.

DURANGO, Colo.— A suspect in the arson cases at Fort Lewis College last Sunday was taken into custody Thursday evening, March 14, 2024, by the Fort Lewis College Police Department.

The suspect was identified as FLC student Zane Maher-Young, 20, from Moab, Utah.

On Friday, Maher-Young appeared in front of 6th Judicial District Court for an advisement hearing at the La Plata County Court in Durango. He’s being held on $100,000 cash bond and is prohibited from being within one mile of Fort Lewis College. He faces charges related to two separate arsons that took place over Sunday, March 10th, at FLC. The incidents damaged the football field press box and destroyed police vehicles.

The arrest was the result of a collaborative investigation involving multiple agencies, including the Fort Lewis College Police Department, Durango Police Department, La Plata County Sheriff’s Office, Durango Fire Protection District, Colorado Bureau of Investigation (CBI), and Alcohol Tobacco Firearms & Explosives (ATF).

We recognize it has been a tense few days for all of the FLC Community.  We would like to thank all of the agencies involved, including those who provided support throughout this time, including the Fort Lewis College Physical Plant.
