Health & Human Performance

How do human bodies work?

FLC's Health & Human Performance Department investigates nutrition and movement to prevent and mitigate chronic diseases.

Schlessman Family Hall draws academics from multiple disciplines to discover how to optimize performance. From the new high-altitude chamber to a hallway featuring sensors to monitor gait, this state-of-the-art facility showcases innovative equipment and lab spaces that will kickstart clinical research with real-world technology, equipping the region with the tools needed to improve personal health and the health of our communities.

From addressing chronic health issues to achieving optimal athletic performance, FLC's Nutrition Science program provides just the right spice to build skills through in-class cooking experiences and access to Durango’s hyper-local food hub.

Three students prep food at a work station table, while another cooks over a stove in the FLC nutrition lab.
A professor and 3 students work together on preparing food in the FLC health science center.

Adapted-exercise courses in the Health & Human Performance Department connect students with community members in the newly remodeled Whalen Gymnasium at Schlessman Family Hall.

A large, diverse group of students and guests do an adaptive exercise activity in the gym with a huge colorful ball.

As an athlete, I have always been interested in physical activities and healthy lifestyles, so I chose Exercise Physiology as my major and Nutrition as my minor. Going to Fort Lewis has been one of my best decisions ever. I’ve met amazing people from all kinds of circles, developed important skills for life, and made many friends. I would like to thank all the professors and staff who made this experience so special by seeing the people beyond their grades and making meaningful connections.
