Larry Hartsfield is a professor of English at Fort Lewis College. He joined the college in 1984. Dr. Hartsfield has a background in American cultural history, American literature, media theory and media studies. He teaches the communication and literature course sequences in the department and is also an affiliate faculty member in the Environmental Studies program, teaching Literature of the Environment, Ecotexts and Ecocritical Theory.
Dr. Hartsfield has two current book projects; one focuses on the intellectual history of biocentrism in American literature and culture, and the other is an ecological (green) reading of Shakespeare. Dr. Hartsfield has published numerous poems, articles and book reviews in regional and national publications. He is the author of several books, including The American Studies Association Annotated Historical Bibliography (with William Goetzmann and Kay Sloan) and The American Response to Professional Crime. He developed the Make It Fun Guide series, published by Wolfdancer Publishing. Titles include The Make It Fun Guide to Poetry, The Make It Fun Guide to Romeo and Juliet, The Make It Fun Guide to Macbeth, and The Make It Fun Guide to Julius Caesar. He has also published A Journey to Health: Overcoming Inflammatory Bowel Disease, a book focused on alternative approaches to Inflammatory Bowel Disease. Dr. Hartsfield is a contributing editor to the Association for the Study of Literature and the Environment Online Bibliography and a manuscript reviewer for Environmental History Review and Literature and Linguistics Review.
Dr. Hartsfield is the 1996 recipient of the Fort Lewis College Alice Admire Excellence in Teaching Award and the 1996 recipient of the Colorado State Board of Agriculture Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching Award. He has been named to the Who’s Who Among American Teachers anthology several times.
