Department scholarships

Ted and LeeAnn Compton Scholarship

  • $2000 ($1000 fall; $1000 spring)

Eligibility

  • You must have junior or senior standing at the end of the spring 2019 term at Fort Lewis College with a declared major or minor in Biology
  • You must be enrolled full time both semesters in the academic year you receive the award
  • Applicants must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher
  • In-state and out-of-state students are eligible, though Colorado residents are given preference

To apply

In addition to the scholarship application, you will need to:

  1. Write a 2-page (double-spaced) essay explaining your career goals, achievements, and why this scholarship would be helpful to you
  2. Include unofficial copies of your college transcripts
  3. Obtain a letter of recommendation from a faculty member in Biology

Andy Senti Scholarship, Department of Biology

  • $600

Eligibility

  • You must be a Biology major that has chosen the ecology and organismic concentration
  • You must have sophomore standing or higher

To apply

Eva Cates Scholarship

  • $600

Eligibility

  • You must have sophomore or junior standing at the end of the spring 2019 term at Fort Lewis College with a declared major or minor in Biology
  • Applicants must have a cumulative GPA of 3.3 or higher
  • In-state and out-of-state students are eligible, though students with in-state status or those in the New Mexico Reciprocal program are given preference

Holmquist, Fern & Walter Scholarship

  • 2.50 cumulative GPA
  • Preference for Native American students
  • Preference to pre-med, teacher licensing, law enforcement, computer science, and all sciences
  • Up to $500

John F. and Mildred S. Reed Scholarship

  • 3.60 GPA or above
  • Incoming first-year only
  • Biology major must carry 15 credit hours per term
  • Up to $1500, can continue up to 8 semesters

Starman Scholarship

  • 2.80 GPA or above (GPA maintained throughout the year)
  • Sophomore or higher with a declared major in any of the following: (Biology, Business Administration, Chemistry, Ecology, Engineering, Geology, or Physics)
  • Preference for students in financial need and working part-time
  • Up to $500

Carleno Memorial Scholarship

  • 3.00 GPA or above
  • Resident of (in order of preference) Durango, La Plata County, Southwest CO, CO
  • Enrolled in a major leading to any medical field
  • Up to $500

Ralph Milo Martin Memorial Scholarship

  • 2.50 GPA or above
  • Increase and maintain GPA to a 3.0 during the sophomore, junior and senior years and carry at least 15 credit hours per term
  • Preference to a resident of La Plata, Archuleta, or San Juan Counties and comes from a ranching or farming background
  • Must have strong financial need
  • Must be a first-generation college student-neither parent having never attended college
  • Preference to recipient working towards a degree that relates to either agriculture, environmental studies, or biology
  • Need no less than three recommendations explaining the recipient’s interest in college and qualities to succeed
  • Essay to include information describing parents' support of you or lack thereof, how much financial aid is requested and justification, why a college degree is essential to you, and how you will finance your college education if no financial aid is received
  • Up to $15,000
