Understanding public lands

Different land agencies have different missions. The U.S. Forest Service (USFS) and Bureau of Land Management (BLM), for example, balance competing uses like energy development and cultural resource protection.

Some areas may also have wilderness or special designations that affect access. While individuals enjoy broad access, group trips require extra consideration to protect the land and its users.
