About Dr. Kaitlin Mattos

I am an environmental scientist, engineer, and community engagement specialist with over a decade of experience working on the intersecting goals of environmental protection, human wellbeing, and community resilience. My current research involves designing and evaluating mid-tech and alternative infrastructure to implement more sustainable approaches to community development. This includes figuring out new water and wastewater systems that can improve health and wellbeing in rural communities, and looking at green infrastructure approaches to improve natural resource management.

In addition to research and teaching, I am interested in engaging with communities to ensure broader impacts of academic research and creating networks to enhance knowledge exchange. I love to figure out how to communicate scientific messages to different audiences, and I think this is a critical skill for our field and for survival on our planet. I am excited to work with the Environment and Climate Institute to improve literacy on environmental topics and provide pathways for college graduates to become environmental decision-makers.

I joined Fort Lewis in 2021. I look forward to continuing my career working with students and community groups to bridge research, policy, and action to reduce our impact on the environment and build sustainable communities.
