Stand out from your peers by learning to teach English as a second language 

If you’re interested in working with people who speak other languages, the TESOL minor will prepare you to teach English as a second language in local, national and international educational contexts, no matter what your major. This minor will require extra coursework which, combined with field placement opportunities, will provide a deeper understanding of the English language, the needs of diverse learners, and how design and teach the English language.

Roadmap for Freshman Students

Freshman

• Enroll in ED 222 Education: Global Perspectives, and earn grade B- or better.
• Complete Fingerprint and Background Check. (This will be done in ED 222)
• Enroll in COMP 150 (or 250 if placed at this level) and earn C or better.
• Enroll in MATH 105 College Mathematics, and earn C or better.
• Enroll in one culture course as elective in the TESOL minor.

Sophomore

• Enroll in ED 341 Foundations of Teaching and ED 342 Foundations of Teaching School Based Experiences, and earn B- or better.
• Enroll in ED 335 Linguistics for Educators, and earn C or better.
• Enroll in ED 333 Southwest Language Immersion in the Spring or Summer term.
• Enroll in ENG 265 Semantics as an Arts and Humanities elective.
• Apply for admission to the Teacher Education Program during your Spring term.
• Apply for scholarships

Junior

• Enroll in ED 434 Teaching Culturally and Linguistically Diverse P-6 and earn a C or better.
• Enroll in ED 447 Instructional Equality, and earn C or better.
• Enroll in ED 428 Language & Literacy Field Based Study, complete 30 hours of fieldwork in classrooms with emergent bilinguals, and pass the course satisfactorily.

Roadmap for Transfer Students (Junior)

Your first step will be to meet with an Admissions Counselor, who can help with initial course planning. At this time, the FLC Registrar will review your transcript to determine which credits from your prior school can transfer here. To research what courses will be accepted:

• If you are transferring from a Colorado Community College, please refer to the State's Transfer Agreement for Colorado Community Colleges.
• If you have an AA in Elementary Education, Early Childhood Education or related field please see our Transfer Policies and Transfer Equivalency table.

When you have been accepted to FLC, you will be assigned a faculty advisor in your first semester. Contact the Teacher Education Department to set up a meeting.

Junior-Fall

• Enroll in ED 341 Foundations of Teaching and ED 342 Foundations of Teaching School Based Experiences, and earn B- or better.
• Enroll in ED 335 Linguistics for Educators, and earn C or better.
• Enroll in ED 333 Southwest Language Immersion in the Spring or Summer term.
• Enroll in ENG 265 Semantics as an Arts and Humanities elective.
• Apply for admission to the Teacher Education Program during your Spring term.

Junior-Spring

• Enroll in ED 434 Teaching Culturally and Linguistically Diverse P-6 and earn a C or better.
• Enroll in ED 447 Instructional Equality, and earn C or better.
• Enroll in ED 428 Language & Literacy Field Based Study, complete 30 hours of fieldwork in classrooms with emergent bilinguals, and pass the course satisfactorily.
