Financial aid for undocumented students

The Colorado ASSET Bill allows undocumented students to be considered for financial aid from the state of Colorado. Students must complete the Colorado Application for State Financial Aid (CASFA) to be considered.

*ASSET Students do not need to complete the FAFSA application.

You have the right to appeal Fort Lewis College's Initial Transfer Evaluation decisions regarding the transferability of a course and how a course(s) is transferred from another accredited college or university.

If you believe you've been charged for institutional costs that you shouldn't be responsible for, you can appeal the charges. Submit an Institutional Charges Appeal Form and supporting documentation, and explain why you believe the charges are unjustified.

How to submit an Institutional Charges Appeal:

Fill out the form, providing a detailed explanation of your reasons for appealing the charges. Include any supporting documentation that may help your case.

Appeal deadline

The deadline for submitting your appeal for a review is midnight, the last calendar day of each month.

Appeal outcomes

The Student Billing Office will review your appeal and decide within 30 days.

• The Student Billing Office will adjust your charges if the appeal is granted.
• You'll receive an email to your official FLC email address explaining the decision if the appeal is denied
• The appeal may also be deferred, which means you must provide additional information for a decision to be made.

The Free Application for Federal Student Aid, or FAFSA helps you to be considered for all types of financial aid, including grants, loans, and work-study employment that you can use to help pay for your college education. The results determine your financial aid file, so it's important to complete the form as accurately and early as possible to maximize your financial aid package.

• The 1098T is a form to report qualified tuition and related expenses for possible education tax credits.
• Qualified tuition and related expenses include tuition and required fees for eligible post-secondary educational institutions.
  • Typically, housing and meals are not eligible costs
• The expenses must be paid during an academic period that begins in the same tax year or the first three months of the following tax year.
• If a student did not receive a 1098T in the mail, it may be because their balance on the account was less than the amount they received for grants and scholarships.
• Students can access and print historical 1098T forms on the ECSI site for the correct tax year if they choose to do so.
• Students can access the current tax year 1098T form at the end of January by logging into their Student Account Suite, selecting My Account, and then Statements. Move to the 1098T tab to view the statement.

Your registration window date range is called a Registration Appointment in Workday. There is no physical appointment necessary.

Registration appointments are your eligible registration date windows for upcoming semester terms and will appear in your Academics app in Workday under the Upcoming Registration Appointments table.

1. Navigate to the Academics app from the top left MENU in your Workday portal or Your Top Apps on the Workday homepage.
2. Find the “Upcoming Registration Appointments” table to view the upcoming semester term or terms and the date range of your registration window.

• To view the course catalog, select View Course Catalog at FLC, located in the Academics app in the MENU on the top left of your Workday portal.
• This report is under the Academic Advising & Planning section and has filtering options for your browsing needs. You cannot register for classes from this report, but you can see all courses offered at FLC without being bound by a specific semester.  
• If you want to view classes to build a saved schedule before registering or want to register for courses, access Find Course Sections in the Academics App.   

Watch how to search for courses to register for from Find Course Sections:

1. Navigate to the Academics app from the top left MENU in your Workday portal or Your Top Apps on the Workday homepage.   
2. Under the Registration section, select Find Course Sections.  
3. In the Start Date Within field, type the term and year you would like to browse and click enter to select from the search results (e.g., “Spring 2024”).  
4. In the Academic Level field, select the academic level type you would like to see (Graduate, Remedial, or Undergraduate)  
5. Leave the Campus Locations field blank. Click OK.  
6. Browse courses using the search bar, the filters on the left side, or scrolling through the complete list.
7. Select the course section name in blue to drill into the course details.   

Adding course sections to a saved schedule does NOT register you for them! To complete registration, you must click the Register button from View My Saved Schedules:  

1. Navigate to the Academics app from either the Workday home page, Your Top Apps box, or the MENU at the top left of the Workday portal.  
2. Find the Registration section in the right column. Select View My Saved Schedules in the task list.  
3. Click into the Start Date within the field, then click All to select the semester term you are registering for.  
4. Click OK.  
5.  When your registration window has opened, you will have a blue Start Registration button below your saved schedule to click.  
6. On the next screen, review your course section selections one more time. Click Register when ready. Click Done.   
7. Congratulations! You have registered!

Undocumented students, new or continuing, are eligible for in-state tuition through FLC's ASSET program if they have attended high school in Colorado for at least three years immediately before graduation or completion of a Colorado GED.

Eligibility for the ASSET program:

• Attend a public or private high school in Colorado for at least three years before graduation OR earn a Colorado GED
• Enroll in a Colorado college or university within 12 months of high school graduation or GED completion, OR graduate/complete GED before September 1, 2013, and have lived in Colorado for 18 months before the semester starts
• If you did not enroll within 12 months of high school graduation or GED completion before September 1, 2013, you must provide proof of living in Colorado for 18 consecutive months before the semester start. The proof must show a Colorado address.

How to apply for FLC's ASSET program:

• Provide:
  • Copy of lease agreement signed by all parties or rent receipts
  • Copy of warranty deed or tax liability statement for homeowners
  • Students who lived with a friend or relative must provide a notarized statement from that person indicating the property address and the dates of residence
• Provide at least two of the following documents:
  • Colorado state identification or driver’s license
  • Colorado vehicle registration
  • Proof of employment (W-2 or check stubs)
  • Signed copies of Colorado income tax return or Colorado tax transcript for the previous year

To apply for ASSET in-state tuition

• Complete the College Opportunity Fund (COF) affidavit indicating you are or will be applying for legal presence in Colorado.
• The Admission Office will give you a Fort Lewis College ASSET Affidavit to fill out that will require additional documents. Submit the packet to the Admission Office 30 days before the semester starts.
• Provide official final high school transcripts from a Colorado school you attended for at least three years or official Colorado GED transcripts.
•  If you are transferring from another college, provide proof of acceptance at a Colorado college or university within 12 months of completing high school or your GED.

Account holds can prevent you from doing important things, like registering for classes.

An Admission hold on your account means you are missing one or more required documents that complete your admission file.

Action required

Send the outstanding document(s) to the Admission Office to remove this hold. In most instances, one or more of these documents is missing from your admission file:

• High school transcripts
  An official copy of your final high school transcript showing the graduation date. Ask your high school to send an official copy of your final transcript to the Admission Office.
• Transfer student or first-year student concurrent enrollment program transcripts
  An official transcript from one or more previously-attended colleges or universities. Ask the institution(s) to send official transcript(s) to the Admission Office.
• Residency documents
  If you are a US citizen seeking an in-state tuition classification, you need to provide a copy of your parent's or parents' driver's license(s) (OR, if you are over 23, a copy of your own driver's license), and a copy of your parent's or parents' Colorado tax return(s) to the Admission Office.
  If you are an undocumented immigrant and attended a high school or received a GED in Colorado, you may be eligible for the Colorado ASSET in-state tuition program. Visit our In-State Tuition for ASSET Students page for more information.

Deadline

You must file all documents about your eligibility for in-state tuition by the first day of the semester.

This hold will prevent you from:

COF is a stipend benefit offered by Colorado State to undergraduate students enrolled in college classes that reduces their tuition fees. It's like a grant, and you don't have to pay it back. Apply on the state website and authorize use of the stipend on WebOpus.

With COF, students get 145 credit hours to use at any Colorado college. If a student exceeds that amount, they can submit an appeal for a one-year extension by completing the COF Limit Waiver.

Contact a Skyhawk Specialist for the best way to drop all your classes after the Census Date. Dropping a class or classes after the Census Date is considered a withdrawal.

There are three ways to withdraw:

1. Use one of your 3 Course Withdrawals (CW)
2. Use your single Semester Withdrawal (SW)
3. Petition for an Administrative Withdrawal (AW).

Dropping or withdrawing consequences

Dropping or withdrawing from all classes can impact your on-campus housing and/or financial aid eligibility.

• Housing: You must be enrolled in at least nine credits to live in the residence halls. If you drop below nine credits, you will have 48 hours to vacate the residence halls.
• Financial Aid: Any change in your enrollment status can affect your eligibility for student loans and scholarships.
